I am losing hair. Am I going to go bald?
How to recognize abnormal hair loss?
What is normal or abnormal hair loss?
How do you know if you are losing your hair?
- When the loss of our hair becomes more important than the regrowth, then, we start to speak of alopecia (hair loss).
- There are different origins of alopecia which are mainly due to premature aging of the scalp.
- Hair falls out when it reaches the end of its 3-7 year life cycle. The lifespan of the hair varies depending on the area where it is located. Normally, when one hair falls out, another automatically grows back into the same hair follicle.

The hair's life cycle
Hair lives in three phases:
- The anagen phase : Hair growth phase which lasts between 3 years for the hair located on the top of the skull as well as at the level of the forehead and 7 years for the hair on the sides of the skull.
- The catagen phase : Period during which the hair no longer grows but remains planted in the hair follicle.
- The telogen phase : Hair loss phase. It lasts 3 months, however during this same period, the hair at the end of its life is gradually replaced by a new hair in the anagen phase.
- It is therefore normal to lose between 75 and 100 hairs per day.
- This hair that has fallen out will grow back automatically, but you can't see it.
- Our hair grows about 1 centimeter per month.
- On the other hand, if hair loss is accelerated or the regrowth of new hair is slowed down, the hair will thin out in certain areas of the scalp and this will be seen fairly quickly. Baldness will then set in slowly.
What causes abnormal hair loss?
- In general, everyone tends to classify hair loss as hereditary or even hormonal.
- But I don't agree with that.
- The main cause of abnormal hair loss is the premature graying of the scalp. Many factors influence this.
- If we look a little at the basics of Chinese medicine, it teaches us that our skin is the image of our internal health and, IMPORTANT, that our hair originates and nourishes itself in our scalp ( which is a part of our skin). Meet Chinese Thought >>
- We understand that if our health is not at the top, that we start to age ... this has consequences, affects our skin and our hair. How to counter the effects of aging? >>
- As I have used to say for many years, during Géomer training courses with beauty and health professionals, hair loss is not only due to heredity or hormones but to many different factors. which together impact premature aging of the skin.
- Our hair will not be so healthy anymore. They will become brittle, thin, dry out, lose their tone and will fall off faster than those that grow back. This gradually resulting in baldness.
Factors that promote hair loss
- Oily scalps.
- Hair follicles filled with crystallized sebum.
- Daily shampoos that will dry out the scalp. Why avoid too frequent shampooing? >>
- A scalp that is too tight when you are too much in the mind (psychological problems).
- Excessive sweating of the scalp.
- The presence of dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, keratosis on the scalp.
- A diet low in minerals or deficient (such as high protein diets).
- Hormonal imbalance.
- A poorly irrigated scalp, too cold.
Build-up creates baldness
- Ultimately, baldness is very often due to a set of factors that accelerate skin aging and cause hair loss.
- Hair loss can also be a side effect of taking certain medications.
- There are also hair loss due to psychological shocks, such as alopecia areata.
- Certain chemicals, used by hairdressers for example, attack the scalp and can break the hair. In this case, as long as the roots are not damaged, the hair will continue to grow. However, if these actions, like pulling, are too frequent or too strong, hair renewal will eventually run out and hair loss will set in permanently.
- In summary, the factors influencing hair loss are very many and varied.
My years of expertise allow me to observe 2 main types of alopecia:
- Alopecia of hormonal origin
- Alopecia of deficiency origin
